Library Overview

The BITS Pilani Library is one of India's premier academic libraries, serving as the intellectual hub of the Institute by supporting teaching, learning, research, innovation, and lifelong learning. Housed in a state-of-the-art building spanning approximately 65,000 square feet on a 2.5-acre campus, the library is strategically located with convenient access from all academic departments. The building is an architectural landmark, featuring grand interiors, soaring ceilings, abundant natural light, excellent ventilation, and beautifully landscaped courtyards that create a serene and inspiring environment for study and research. The library's distinctive architecture is further enriched with theme-based artwork depicting the Guru–Shishya Parampara, intricate mirror work, and elegant exposed-brick design, reflecting a harmonious blend of tradition and modernity. Designed to provide a comfortable and intellectually stimulating atmosphere, the library accommodates more than 1,050 users at a time through a variety of reading halls, silent study areas, collaborative learning space like, research zones, Group Discussion Rooms, Brainstorm Room, Makerspace, High Performance Computing (HPC) Facility, and Birla Heritage Gallery encourage collaborative learning, creativity, innovation, interdisciplinary research, and project-based learning. These facilities empower students to exchange ideas, develop prototypes, conduct research, deliver presentations, and cultivate the leadership and problem-solving skills essential for lifelong learning and professional excellence. The library maintains one of the richest academic collections among Indian private universities, with over 2.5 lakh print books, including rare books, manuscripts, bound volumes of journals dating back to the 1920s, standards, reports, theses, dissertations, monographs, and reference resources across diverse disciplines. It also houses a dedicated Career Resources Collection that supports students preparing for competitive examinations, higher education, and professional recruitment. To complement its extensive print resources, the library subscribes to 50+ national and international print journals, provides access to 20 research databases, 15,500+ high quality ejournals, and 2.90 lakh+ e-book titles. Every year, the collection continues to grow through the addition of new books, electronic resources, and research outputs, ensuring that the academic community has access to the latest scholarly information. The library leverages advanced technologies to deliver seamless access to information resources. All library operations are fully automated through the Koha Integrated Library Management System (ILMS), integrated with RFID technology and self-service kiosks for book issue, return, and renewal. A web-scale discovery platform, OneSearch, provides a Google-like single-window search interface that enables users to simultaneously discover print collections, electronic resources, institutional repositories, and WebOPAC across the Pilani, Goa, and Hyderabad campuses, significantly improving resource discovery and user convenience. Remote access to subscribed electronic resources is provided through the OpenAthens Single Sign-On (SSO) platform, enabling authorized users to securely access library resources anytime and from anywhere. This service supports more than 50,000+ Work Integrated Learning Program (WILP) students, along with over 6,000 regular students, research scholars, and faculty members, ensuring uninterrupted access to scholarly content beyond the campus network. The library has also established ShivGanga – A Reservoir of BITS Knowledge, its institutional digital repository developed using DSpace. ShivGanga preserves and provides access to the Institute's intellectual assets, including doctoral theses, dissertations, rare books, Sri G. D. Birla's personal collection, faculty publications, historical documents, and other scholarly materials, thereby safeguarding the academic heritage of the Institute for future generations. Committed to delivering user-centric services, the library offers comprehensive support through reference and research assistance, information literacy programmes, user orientation, document delivery, inter-library loan, book lending, consultation services, research support, and online renewal facilities. Its dynamic digital presence strengthens communication with users by promoting library resources, collecting feedback, disseminating research information, and supporting the evolving teaching and learning requirements of the Institute. The BITS Pilani Library is actively associated with several prestigious national initiatives and consortia that strengthen access to scholarly resources and research infrastructure. The library is an institutional member of the e-ShodhSindhu Consortium, DELNET (Developing Library Network), and actively participates in major INFLIBNET Centre initiatives, including ShodhGanga, ShodhChakra, and IRINS, under formal Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs). These collaborations significantly enhance resource sharing, scholarly communication, research visibility, and institutional collaboration. By combining world-class infrastructure, rich scholarly collections, advanced digital technologies, innovative learning spaces, and responsive user services, the BITS Pilani Library continues to serve as a vibrant centre for knowledge creation and dissemination. It remains committed to empowering students, researchers, and faculty with the information resources, technologies, and collaborative environments necessary to excel in academic pursuits, foster innovation, and contribute meaningfully to society.
